About Elgin, TX

Head East out of Downtown Austin and you will notice the landscape begins to change. The majestic curves of Texas Hill County flatten into rich, Blackland prairie soil upon which the city of Elgin is built. A suburb of Austin and part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area, the National Trust for Historic Preservation recognizes this small town as a National Main Street Community.

Situated in Travis and Bastrop counties, Elgin is home to some of the area’s best barbeque. Also known as the “Sausage Capital of Texas”, many residents of the city are skilled cooks. The famous Meyer’s Sausage also resides in Elgin, attracting travelers from Austin and other parts of Texas for decades to enjoy the smoked, slow-cooked meaty masterpieces made by pitmasters.

Besides the culinary artistry, Elgin is also popular for its picturesque views and has been featured in several feature films for its historic charm. With a wide array of seasonal events and a thriving cultural arts center, the city provides a vibrant cultural and social lifestyle to its residents. Moreover, land ownership is a part of this Texan city’s culture.

From simple pre-fabricated homes to “ranchettes”, also known as a “gentleman’s ranch”, many homes sit on acre-sized parcels or even larger. Over the years, construction and growth have been maintained at an even pace, so rest assured homebuyers would find plenty of housing options in both the historic areas and newer residential subdivisions.

The city has is also referred to as the “Brick Capital of the Southwest”, by many and for good reason. It housed three operating brickyards in the 20th century, out of which two are still open to date. Many of the buildings in Elgin’s Commercial Historic District, that includes 14 blocks of industrial and commercial buildings, are constructed from locally produced brick.

During the last decade or so, the public sector, as well as business owners and private property owners, have invested $9 million in the city’s downtown area. Most of the buildings have been renovated or restored, and many are still undergoing renovation. Some of Elgin’s major employers include Elgin ISD, HED Grocery, Wal-Mart, and the Acme Brick Company.

Residents of Elgin enjoy a cultural environment with almost every type of music, from symphony orchestra to country dance halls.  As far as outdoor activities are concerned, you can enjoy a round of golf at The Shadow Glen Gold Club. The Bastrop State Park and Lake Bastrop are other popular destinations for adventures under the sky. For travelers who want to enjoy the panoramic views of Texas Hill County, the city’s motto “Perfectly Situated” delivers exactly as promised!

McDade ISD and Elgin ISD serve the students of the city. Vista Academy, Neidig Elementary, and the Booker T Washington Elementary School provide education services for younger students. Phoenix High School, Elgin High School, and Elgin Middle offer education to middle and high schoolers. In 2013, Austin Community College opened an impressive campus that offers technical and vocational programs, as well as preparatory courses and associate degrees.
